Nailing that interview! Tips and ideas.

We have all been there and will be again, who knows how many times... the INTERVIEW process! Comfortable or not, intimidating or not, it's a necessary evil. I will try to stay away from cliches but bear with me if you find some of the tips obvious - they are not for everyone. Here are my top 5 tips for getting that job!

1. Dress to impress (yourself first!).

Well it might be evident, but I will still mention it. Your appearance DOES matter, particularly during an interview. It's the first impression the interviewers will get of you and how much you value their time as well as the position itself. Stick to the dress code required in the specific industry; but most and above all, wear what makes you feel good and comfortable while showing off your character.

Example: If you need to be formally dressed, an elegant scarf or statement jewelry can add your temperament without compromising your formal profile - for women of course.

2. Research all about it and show genuine interest.

Of course you should be prepared about the company (goals, projects, clients, competitors etc.) but what will take you to the next level is to have an educated insight about that extra little something. This could be the background and interests of the interviewers (LinkedIn offers a lot on this), the company's case studies on a specific client or challenge they faced or even causes and charities the company is investing in. You most likely won't be specifically asked about these, but being well knowledgeable and incorporating them in your answers will be a big bonus.

Example: "I am fascinated by Financial Mathematics and was very pleased to find out that you have also done your Master's in that area."

3. Bring in the "Why-I-Am-Special" attitude.

This has nothing to do with not being personable or being posh. It's about demonstrating what your added value to the job and the company culture is and why should they pick you instead of someone else. How? Think of what really interests you in this career and blend in your personal passions about it.

Example: "I love the fact that you are working with online shops; I have always been keen to understand how the online businesses are run. Every time I shop online there's so much that intrigues me: the shopping journey, the browsing experience, the logistics behind getting that dress I want on time."

4. Stay focused and radiant.

Tough questions might come up or even questions you cannot think of any answer to. Don't worry, that's only human. Try not to stutter or mumble your answer. Instead, take a moment to focus and think about it - careful not to take too long though. Stay calm and smile while providing as much as a straightforward answer as you can.

5. Don't lie. It only makes things worse.

No doubt it is tempting to add a little more on your knowledge, skills or experience - but sticking to the one and only truth is always better. If you don't have knowledge in an area or lack experience it's not bad to be honest about it, as long as you top this up with your positive attitude and devotion.

Example: "Unfortunately, I have not worked with French-speaking clients as much as I would wish to. However, my French level is intermediate and I have been looking for a chance to improve it. It will be so fascinating and rewarding to be able to do this every day at work."

Healthy, happy and prosperous living everyone!
